Jeff Harding, WBC world light heavyweight champion, defended his title in a rematch against Dennis Andries
Date: July 28, 1990
Venue: Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
Andries stance: orthodox
Harding stance: orthodox
Just over a year earlier, Jeff Harding had taken the WBC title from Dennis Andries in dramatic fashion. The new champion went on to make a couple of defences before a rematch with Andries on home turf in Melbourne.
Andries also had two fights in the interim, and the scene was set for an eagerly anticipated second fight between the two light heavyweights. For most observers, the biggest advantage Harding enjoyed was the age difference. Officially, the challenger was 11 years older than the champion at 36. There were rumours Andries might be around five years older than listed, and that might explain why he faded so badly in their first fight after building a big lead over the first ten rounds.
