Alexis Arguello, WBC world lightweight champion, defended his title against Ray Mancini
Date: October 3, 1981
Venue: Ballys Park Place casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey
Arguello stance: orthodox
Mancini stance: orthodox
Alexis Arguello was making the first defence of his WBC world title that he had won just three months earlier, when he beat Jim Watt in London over 15 rounds in London. That victory meant Arguello became only the second Latin American (and sixth boxer overall) to win world titles at three different weight classes.
This bout was the 73rd of Arguello's career, and by contrast his challenger, Ray Mancini, was a 20 year-old novice, although he had already crammed 20 fights into his two years as a pro before he faced Arguello. Would youth and energy prevail over the age and experience of the champion from Nicaragua? What followed is often recognised as an all time classic, and the video we have is of extended highlights.
