Power outages and flooding have affected areas in Southern England as Storm Ciaran swept across the region. High winds and treacherous conditions have also caused disruption and in places left houses and vehicles seriously damaged. Let's take a closer look at the situation.

On Wednesday evening a yellow weather warning for Storm Ciaran came from the MET office as they anticipated powerful winds and very heavy rainfall. In the Channel Islands, this was upgraded to a red weather warning where some areas saw winds of up to one hundred and four miles per hour.

A major incident was declared in areas including the Isle of Wight and Hampshire who took the brunt of the storm on the mainland. Thousands of homes across the South were left without power, and hundreds of schools closed their doors.

Transport and travel were also affected with ferries and trains being cancelled, and commuters urged to work from home. The effects of the storm are expected to last until Saturday, with most parts of the UK likely to be affected.
