‘Pepper X’ Is Named New Hottest Pepper , by Guinness World Records.
The Carolina Reaper, the world's
hottest pepper for a decade, has been dethroned, 'The Guardian' reports.
Pepper X has taken its place.
The pepper "measures 2.69m heat units on the Scoville scale," the method to determine spiciness, 'The Guardian' reports.
It beat the Carolina Reaper
by more than 1m units.
Ed Currie, the creator of the
Carolina Reaper, also created Pepper X.
Pepper X is the result of
"a team effort" in which Currie
crossbred the Carolina Reaper with his
friend's "brutally hot" pepper from Michigan.
Pepper X was first revealed on 'Hot Ones,'
the popular show in which celebrities eat chicken wings flavored with different hot sauces.
When we bred this pepper out, first thing we looked for is something to raise that heat level to what we thought was going to be the maximum, and the second thing was flavor, Ed Currie, via statement.
Consumers will be able to try the pepper
only in the form of hot sauce, as Currie intends
to protect his intellectual property.
People have been trying to steal
[the Carolina Reaper pepper] for the
last 10 years. There are also some
high corporations who want to take what’s not theirs, and they’re willing
to pay other people to do it, Ed Currie, via statement.
All the time and effort that we
put in at the farm to make sure this
got stabilized and became the hottest
pepper in the world is now validated.
I can’t tell you how excited I am right now, Ed Currie, via statement
