József Gál's Fatal Crash @ Hegyhát Rally 2008 (Aftermath)

Hungarian rallyman József Gál, 41-year-old, was hit and killed by a flying wheel while spectating the Hegyhát Rally. The accident happened on Sunday, 30 March 2008 near the village of Diósberény, Tolna region, Hungary, during the second special stage of the rally.

The #11 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI - reg. plate number P-00231 - of the Hungarian team József Kató-István Vincze, lost its left front wheel, which struck József Gál. The man died at Tamási hospital from his severe head injuries.

József Gál was an active and experienced driver who competed in a Renault Clio Williams since 2004, earning several top-ten finishes in his class. He made his debut in the late 1980s, as a rally co-driver. Ironically, during his whole career his navigator was just István Vincze, who at the beginning of 2008 joined József Kató.

The Hegyhát Rally was a round of the 2008 RTE (Rali-Túra Egyesület) Championship. This was the first edition of the event which was held through the hills south of Lake Balaton, in southern Hungary. Winners of the rally were Pál Lovász-Ákos Berényi in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX.
