EAR NERVES OF DOGS
A dog’s ears are sensitive to the touch because they contain a network of nerve branches, and the nerves send impulses throughout the body. When you rub your dog’s ears, it feels relaxed and calm.
Dogs like their ears rubbed because it brings them pleasure through reflexology and endorphins. There is no doubt about that. Humans love massages too, so it is not hard to see why dogs love them.
And it’s all of the nerves present in a dog’s ears; a dog’s ears are sensitive to the touch because they contain a network of nerve branches, and the nerves send impulses throughout the body. When you rub your dog’s ears, endorphins, which are the natural ‘feel-good’ hormones, are released and relax and calm your dog.
To rub her ears, start at the base of the ear (closer to the head) and grasp it firmly but gently. Rubdown to the tip and repeat. Like human feet, a dog’s feet become cramped and tense after walking all day.
Most dogs are comfortable being petted on the chest, the shoulders, and the base of the neck. When petting these areas, reach in from the side, rather than moving your hand over the top of the dog’s head.
