A railway bridge being built across a ravine in Mizoram has collapsed, killing at least 17 labourers working on the project, officials said, with many others reported missing. Officials said many more are feared trapped at the site and efforts are on to rescue them. They also said that there were about 35 to 40 construction workers when the bridge collapsed. The incident was reported from Sairang area, about 21 km from Aizawl. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said rescue operation is underway at the accident site. Video footage posted by Mizoram Chief Minister showed a metal frame that had toppled off towering columns into a wooded valley below. People had “come out in large numbers to help with rescue”, the CM said, adding that he was “deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. The Sairang branch of Young Mizo Association is currently carrying out rescue operations.
