on Aug. 16, NBC News reports. .
The president and first lady will
travel to Hawaii on Aug. 21. .
In Maui, the president and first lady will
be welcomed by state and local leaders to
see firsthand the impacts of the wildfires and the devastating loss of life and land that has occurred on the island, as well as discuss
the next steps in the recovery effort, Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary, via statement.
The announcement comes after Biden said they'd make the trip "as soon as we can"
but "don't want to get in the way.".

President Biden has reportedly been
communicating with FEMA Administrator
Deanna Criswell, Gov. Josh Green and state senators. .
Green "advised that the search and recovery efforts are expected to be at a stage early next week to allow for a presidential visit," Jean-Pierre said.
106 human remains have been recovered on Maui so far, authorities say, though that number is expected to rise. .
Most of the remains have
not yet been identified. .
So far, FEMA has supplied "50,000 meals, 75,000 liters of water, 5,000 cots and 10,000 blankets and shelter supplies to the county government for distribution," according to the White House.
