After months long of tussle and discussions, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library has officially been renamed as the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society. The decision came on the eve of Independence Day, on 14th August.
This whole discussion over changing the name of the Nehru Memorial, started in mid-june, during a special meeting of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society, where it was resolved to change the name of the memorial to Prime Minister’s Museum and Library Society.
The whole process started on June 15, when the society had met and had passed the resolution to change the name. The meeting was also presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is the Vice-President of the Society. The society had to meet again, after a month, and had reiterated the resolution. This was done on 18th July. After that it went to the registrar of society and the registrar changed the name a few days later. The whole new name of the society came into effect in August.
Talking about the history of the memorial, it had once served as the official residence of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The residence was called Teen Murti Bhavan.
The Vice-Chairman and Executive Council of the memorial, Surya Prakash, share on his X handle that “Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is now Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) Society w.e.f August 14, 2023 – in tune with the democratisation and diversification of the remit of the society.” He further greeted Happy Independence Day in his tweet and had tagged @narendramodi, @rajnathsingh @MinOfCultureGoI on that same post.
Congress party has alleged that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a single point agenda of denying, distorting, defaming and destroying Nehru’s legacy. The opposition party, congress has asserted that despite the relentless assault, Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy would live on in the world to see and he would inspire generations to come.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, has taken a jibe at the BJP-led government. He wrote on his X handle, that PM Modi has fear, complexes and insecurities when it comes to longest serving PM. He further wrote that Modi can never take away Nehru’s gigantic contributions in the freedom movement, and his achievements in building the democratic, secular, scientific and liberal foundations of India.
Reacting to Congress party's criticism, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad possessed a question for the Congress party as to why former India Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri did not get a place in the museum. He tried to corner the Congress party over dynastic politics. He further said that Congress thinks only of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and the family.
