In this episode of an editorial, Mr. Sujit Nair engages in a conversation with senior political analyst Mr. Amitabh Tiwari to discuss the possibility of defeating Prime Minister Modi in the upcoming 2024 election. The BJP and its alliance, the NDA, consider Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar as crucial states where they achieved significant success in the 2019 elections. These three states accounted for 144 seats, which made up 41 percent of their total seats won. The BJP secured an impressive 86 percent of the available seats in these states.
However, the opposition alliances, namely the MVA (comprising Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP) in Maharashtra (prior to recent developments within the NCP) and the MGB (consisting of JDU, RJD, INC, and Left) in Bihar, posed a substantial challenge to the BJP's aim of replicating its 2019 performance.
Aware of this challenge, the BJP has managed to divide the NCP and is now likely to include SBSP (OP Rajbhar's party in Uttar Pradesh) and HAM plus Chirag Paswan in Bihar. The acquisition of alliances in Maharashtra is expected to compensate for any potential loss of votes to Uddhav Thackeray's party, based on an analysis of the 2019 Lok Sabha election data.
