Amidst heavy rainfall leading to significant waterlogging across various parts of the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal acknowledged that the city's infrastructure was ill-equipped to handle such an extraordinary deluge. During a press conference, he stated that Delhi experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall, with 153 mm recorded in just 24 hours from July 8 to July 9, the highest in four decades. Kejriwal highlighted that the existing drainage master plan, formulated in 1976 when the city's population was around 6 million, has not been updated despite the population quadrupling since then. He emphasized that this was not a time for blame but rather a realization of the urgent need for a new drainage master plan. Kejriwal also mentioned that the possibility of floods in Delhi depends on the release of water from the Hathnikund barrage upstream of the Yamuna river. However, based on weather predictions for the coming days, the water level in the Yamuna is not expected to rise significantly, reducing the likelihood of a flood.
