Despite the expected relief brought by the monsoon, the political temperature in Maharashtra continues to rise. Over the weekend, the state witnessed another power struggle, rather the "Pawar struggle. " It invoked a sense of déjà vu among Maharashtra's voters as Ajit Pawar was sworn in as deputy CM in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis. Today, on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, Sharad Pawar, the former Chief Minister and patriarch of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), displayed his strength while paying homage to Yashwantrao Chavan, Maharashtra's first Chief Minister, at his memorial in Karad district. During an emotional address to his supporters, Sharad Pawar said "My fight against communal forces begins today. Such rebellions happen. I will rebuild the party," Mr Pawar said in Karad today. He also accused the BJP of creating fear in society. Addressing a press conference later in Satara, Sharad Pawar also said he has launched a statewide tour to strengthen the NCP and boost the confidence of party workers, unfazed by actions of a few leaders. "We will ensure that those who attempted to fracture the NCP are put in their rightful place,Said Mr Pawar. Similar to what Uddhav Thackeray had said during the initial stages of the Shinde rebellion. However, In a press interaction, Sharad Pawar stated his decision not to pursue a legal battle, opting instead to engage directly with the people. Subsequently, on Sunday night, the NCP filed a disqualification petition against Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs who were sworn in as ministers in the Eknath Shinde-led government. The NCP claimed that Ajit lacks the support of 36 party MLAs, while the party's working president and Ajit's cousin, Supriya Sule, mentioned that his defection would not impact their relationship. Interestingly, the ongoing situation reveals an uncommon aspect of party splits. Ajit Pawar is yet to disclose the number of supporting MLAs, apart from the nine who were sworn in as ministers on Sunday. In fact, Ajit Pawar states that the entire party stands united with him. With the NCP possessing 53 MLAs and nine MLCs, the support of 36 is crucial for Ajit Pawar to assert his claim over the party and its symbol; otherwise, he faces disqualification. Could there be more to this situation than meets the eye? We will keep you updated about all the unfolding developments in Maharashtra politics. Stay tuned to HW News English
