A man has been arrested as part of a murder probe into the death of a woman in her 60s in a coastal town.
Emergency services were called to a property in Tansy Lane in Portishead, Somerset, at around noon yesterday (27/6) where a woman in her 60's was found seriously injured.
Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics to save her, she died at the scene.
The victim has not yet been named, but a formal identification will take place 'in due course'.
A 39-year-old man was arrested by Avon and Somerset Police, and remains in custody.
A cordon remains in place while enquiries and forensic examinations continuing.
Avon and Somerset Police said the victim was known to the force, and have therefore referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Neighbourhood policing Chief Inspector Adam O'Loughlin said: "Our collective thoughts are with the victim's friends and family in what is undoubtedly a very difficult time. They are being supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.
"We understand this can be an incredibly shocking and upsetting time for many people and we thank the local community for their understanding while the scene is in place.
"While we believe this is an isolated incident. There will be increased police presence in the area over the coming days.
"Anyone with concerns or questions are invited to speak to any of our officers or to contact the local neighbourhood policing team.
We have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to prior police contact.
