How's this for a day at the beach?

Huge military transport planes have been spotted landing on Pembrey Sands in West Wales.

The RAF Atlas A400Ms have been carrying out beach landing training at the coastal spot this week.

They also practiced the insertion of so-called pathfinders, specialised soldiers dropped into place in order to set up and operate drop zones.

Incredible pictures show the crews of the Brize Norton-based LXX and 30 Squadrons carrying out the objectives.

The operation was facilitated by Tactical Air Traffic Controllers and Tactical Fire who ensure the beach and activity is completed as intended.

An RAF spokesperson explains: "LXX and 30 Squadron aircrews and Tactical Air Traffic Controllers from RAF Brize Norton have been honing their skills to ensure they are fully prepared to land the aircraft on natural surfaces like grass or sand in remote locations.

"The aircraft carried a team of Pathfinders from 16 Air Assault Brigade who practiced their rapid disembarkation drills.

"Within seconds of landing, the braces that secured the Pathfinders’ vehicles were released and they drove off the ramp at the back of the aircraft."

Pembrey Sands Air Weapons Range is a Ministry of Defence air weapons range located near the village of Pembrey, Carmarthenshire.
