The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore following the 2022 season. During the off season the Cowboys decided to make HC Mike McCarthy the new play caller in Dallas.

That definitely adds to McCarthy’s plate but he said it isn’t a problem. McCarthy spent 13 years with the Green Bay Packers as head coach and primary play-caller.

“I shortened the meetings by five minutes because I want more time with my quarterbacks.” McCarthy told us in the press conference leading up to minicamp.

“The way we talk to the offense is different than what he have done in the past.” McCarthy stated.

McCarthy wants the quarterbacks to be in charge of their own huddle.

“At the end of the day, the quarterback needs to own the offense. I have no interest in being known as some guru coach or a smart coach. I want smart, Hall of Fame type quarterbacks. The only way to get there is make them own the offense. … He’s done a really good job of taking ownership of that. He’s knocked it out of the park.”

QB Dak Prescott said, “It’s refreshing. It’s fun.” in regards to McCarthy calling the offensive plays.
“Just being able to understand, being in the same wavelength and understanding why he’s calling a play, what’s the purpose of the play, what he expects out of that, and making sure we’re on the same accord there. It has to be that constant communication,” Prescott told reporters. “[After last week’s OTA] he said, ‘You know what, go look at everything we put in and make sure we’re running the things you like and the things we’re good at.

“I’ve been where Kellen’s been,” McCarthy said, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up, but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. I think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play-caller, you’re a little more in tune with (everything).
“I don’t desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship. And if we’ve got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that’s what we’ll do because we have a really good defense.”

This past season it was no secret that the offense was lacking and Dak Prescott struggled not turning the ball over. Prescott threw a career high 15 interceptions during the 2022 season and with McCarthy the head of things now they are hoping to drop that number dramatically.
