Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra wuth Vocal refrain – Ah-Ha!, Fox-trot/Charleston (Sidney Clare-James V.Monaco), Victor 1925 (USA)

NOTE: This is one of those fox-trots, which – on the crest of wave of the charleston-madness of the Roaring Twenties – had been stubbornly labeled on records as the “fox-trots” yet were performed as the charlestons. The reason of that “manipulation” will remain a secret for me. Several times I have performed here my private theory of it: during the first half of the 1920s, the foxtrot – a new rhythm, yet already well received and established by a wide audience - was therefore better sold than a total novelty and somewhat crazy charleston. Paul Whiteman can be, with no exaggeration called the “king of the Charleston Rhythm”, for his 1925 enthralling rendition of The Original Charleston will be forever the musical icon of the mad 1920s and “Ah-Ha!” albeit not so famous, also has its timeless charm of the Roaring Twenties’ style.
