They aren’t just pets, they are companions, part of the family and a friend for life, so much so, more than half of households in the UK own a pet. However, some private renters are now taking drastic action to keep their furry friend by their side and avoid being evicted by private landlords.

These drastic measures go as far as hiding an animal from their landlord (10%), with almost of quarter of those who were caught being evicted for doing so (22%). Half of tenants admit it’s affecting their mental health, feeling anxious about having to hide their animal.

The research by Mars Petcare also shows 90% of properties on the private rental market don’t allow pets, despite a demand on online estate agent for pet-friendly rentals increasing by 120%.

If a landlord does allow a pet, renters are paying the price, often having to pay out extra on top of their monthly charge for the privilege.

Now, one of the UK’s oldest and best known animal rescue centres, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is backing a new campaign led by Mars Petcare and media personality, landlord and animal lover, Zara McDermott, rallying animal lovers to come together raise awareness of the issue. Mars and Battersea have published a handy digital guide – The Petiquette Guide to Rentals and Pet Ownership – with all the info tenants and landlords need to know when it comes to renting with a pet. They’re also asking people sign a pledge for new pet-friendly legislation provisions in the Renters’ Reform Bill to be brought before parliament before the end of the year.
