Colourful carnivals, fiestas and parades are part of life for people in Brazil, bringing communities together in solidarity to celebrate. But they also have a serious side. Parts of the city of Recife have murder rates as high as some war zones. CAFOD partner Tarrafa teaches dance and drumming. It uses carnivals to bring communities together and create a positive alternative to a reality where drugs, crime and killings are an everyday experience. In the Amazon village of Miratu young people are keeping traditional music and dance alive. CAFOD supports indigenous communities to protect their land, resources and culture.
