Compact sedans may not be as popular as they used to be, but historically, some of the most well-known models in the local market fell under this category. We’re talking names like the Toyota Corolla, the Nissan Sentra, the Mitsubishi Lancer, and the Honda Civic.

It’s that last nameplate that the newly launched 2023 GAC Empow has its sights set on. Like the latest Civic generation, GAC’s compact sedan is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, and its output figures are definitely up to par with those of the Honda. What it doesn’t have is the sporty roots and racing pedigree of its Japanese peer—but for casual drivers, that’s not necessarily a deal breaker.
