Uttarakhand Sthapna Diwas is observed every year on November 9 to mark the date in 2000 when Uttarakhand, earlier known as Uttaranchal, became the 27th state of India. The hill state observes its State Foundation Day with social and cultural events and activities. It was carved out of Uttar Pradesh after a long-drawn agitation and since the UP government was unable to address the interests of the people in the Himalayan region who struggled with issues like unemployment, poverty and poor infrastructure, a separate state was carved out.
