US 'Robin Hood' grocery store helps Atlanta residents as inflation skyrockets

A supermarket in a one of Atlanta's poorest neighborhoods provides local residents with free food and supplies, such as vegetables, frozen meals and paper towels. "Places like this are necessary, there are starving people, starving sick people," says a shopper who came with her son. With its 12% inflation rate, Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, is one of the cities where prices have increased the most this year in the United States.

The Grocery Spot, which another customer describes as "a hidden gem," is open three days a week and serves close to 500 people a day. "Everybody has their own problem on how they can't afford the food due to the way everything's gone skyrocketing," store manager Slugga tells AFP. "Donations come to us in ways to keep us going. People see we're short on this, we're short on that, they help us. It's the Robin Hood effect!"
