In Ireland they are more popular than Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy and The Boomtown Rats put together... Along with the Chieftains and Planxty began to popularize traditional Irish music in Britain and, no less significantly, in the United States. The Horslips started playing together (on a purely amateur basis at first) in 1970. They performed folk melodies, using not only archaic harps and bagpipes, but also quite modern guitars and drums, which helped them find listeners both in folk circles and on the local rock scene. March 17, 1972, on the day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Eire, Charles O'Connor (Charles O'Connor; violin, mandolin, vocals), John Fean ( John Fean; guitar, vocals), Jim Lockhart (Jim Lockhart; flutes, keyboards), Barry Devlin (Barry Devlin; bass, vocals) and Eamon Carr (Eamon Carr; drums) decided that it was time for them to transfer their hobby to professional rails, however, in unlike the vast majority of Irish bands looking for happiness across St. George's Channel (as was the case with Thin Lizzy, Skid Row, etc.), they chose to stay at home and take care of everything in their own hands. Without delay, they opened their own label Oats , under which their first single Johnny's Wedding was released just a week later , which instantly became a hit in Ireland. In July they repeated their success with Green Gravel. Despite the intrusive attention of the big record companies who offered their services in every possible way, Horslips continued to strengthen their independence. In 1973, having rented the famous Rolling Stones studio car , they themselves recorded, mixed, printed and distributed around the country the circulation of their debut album Happy To Meet...Sorry To Part . The album occupied the top of the local charts for 2 months, gave way to another Furniture hit and became one of the most successful records in the history of Ireland. The first (by time of creation) album of the Celtic Rock genre .
