Javier Hernández produced an unfortunate Panenka miss in the 97th minute of the LA Galaxy's 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City.

The former Manchester United striker scored twice in the match, including an 88th-minute penalty to level things up at Dignity Health Sports Park.

The Mexican international had the opportunity to complete his hat-trick and seal an emphatic 3-2 victory.

The 34-year-old striker opened the scoring against Sporting KC with a great finish in the fourth minute before second-half goals from Johnathon Russell and Felipe Hernandez put the visitors up 2-1.

He then sent John Pulskamp the wrong way with his first penalty of the match and put it right into the top corner in the 88th minute.

Hernandez, however, greatly complicated matters with his second effort from 12 yards in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

The scoring striker, who has scored seven goals in seven games to take his tally to 14 for the season, went for a Panenka but telegraphed his attempt.

The ball went straight into Pulskamp's hands, leaving Hernandez with his head in his hands.

Hernandez then apologized to the Galaxy hands after the game and raised his hands to them in a sign of prayer.

As he walked off the court moments later, he told the LA Galaxy fans: 'We had a clear chance to get the three points, we couldn't... I take responsibility, I'm sorry.

"Two weeks ago Panenka worked very well, now this time it didn't. I need to look forward, take responsibility and keep improving and working."

Hernandez also recently made headlines for a dive against Toronto FC, where he went down with notable exaggeration after a fight with Michael Bradley, Richie Laryea and Chris Mavinga.

The Galaxy are currently eighth in the Western Conference and return to action against Nashville on September 10, as they continue to chase playoff spots.
