A 20-month-old girl has died after being struck on the head during a violent hailstorm on August 31, 2022. The fist-sized hailstones, measuring up to 10 centimetres (4in) in diameter, rained down on an area around the village of La Bisbal d'Empordà in Catalonia, Spain, injuring about 50 people. According to the meteorology agency Meteocat, the hailstones were the biggest recorded in two decades in Catalonia. Parts of the region remained on storm alert.
