Sophie is still feeling like a stranger in her own life - and the upcoming episode of Apple TV+'s latest drama doesn't seem to be bringing much clarity to "Surface"'s main mystery. In a POPSUGAR exclusive clip from episode seven of the series, titled "It was Always Going to End This Way," Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and her husband James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) discuss the events of her seeming suicide attempt. The conversation comes after the events of episode six flipped much of what Sophie had assumed to be true on its head.
"I don't know . . . how could I be so wrong about him?" Sophie asks James in the clip. "The things he said to me, they seemed like the answer to the one question I couldn't get out of my head."
Responds James, "What question?" Sophie then poses her query: "What if I didn't jump?"
After James appears shaken by her line of thought, Sophie elaborates, "I keep having these memories of a man pushing me from the ferry. Hannah told me they're not real, they're my mind's defense against the unknown. But that hasn't stopped me from seeing them over and over."

The thriller follows the wealthy elite in San Francisco after Sophie's jump from a ferry leaves her with a traumatic brain injury and memory loss. As she begins to unravel what she knows about her life before the incident, she questions what's real and what's a fabrication. The penultimate episode will be released on Friday, followed by the finale, episode eight, on Sept. 2.
"Surface," which began streaming in July also stars Ari Graynor, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Francois Arnaud and Stephan James. The series is produced by Apple Studios and Reese Witherspoon's "Hello Sunshine."
