ENGLAND cyclist Matt Walls suffered a terrible accident at the Commonwealth Games when he crashed into the CROWD, leaving a fan covered in blood.
The accident, which involved several cyclists, occurred during the final lap of the men's qualifying of the 15km scratch race and medical teams rushed to the scene.
Matt Bostock from the Isle of Man had to be carried off on a stretcher, while English cyclist Walls and his bike went flying over the barriers and into the crowd.
Paramedics erected screens to protect Olympic champion omnium Walls as he received treatment and took away a man in a wheelchair covered in blood.
After the collision, the morning session was abandoned (only one race remained) and the velodrome in East London quickly emptied of spectators.
Three cyclists, Walls, Bostock and Canadian Derek Gee, were taken to hospital. Two spectators were attended to at the velodrome.
But British Cycling later said: "Following medical treatment at hospital, Matt Walls was released with stitches to his forehead, scrapes and bruises, but fortunately no serious injuries."
"We send our best wishes to all other riders and spectators involved in the crash and thank the medical teams for their expert care."
The athlete tonight updated fans on Twitter.
He tweeted: "Thank you all for the messages and support! Somehow I made it out with no serious injuries, just a few stitches and quite a bit of bruising. Really hope everyone else involved is okay, including any spectators who may have been hurt."
Britain's Ethan Vernon won qualifying, but Canada's Mathias Guillemette was disqualified by race officials for causing the initial crash.
