India has a rich cultural heritage. Historical buildings, monuments, coins, paintings, folk tales, and folk dances constitute our cultural heritage. Here we will discuss about some classical dance forms.

In India, there are mainly two types of dance forms—classical and folk. It is believed that most of the classical dances began as a form of worship in temples. Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, Kathakali, Manipuri, Odissi, Sattriya,
and Mohiniattam are examples of classical dance forms. Let us know more about some of these classical dances.

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms of India. It is very popular in the southern parts of India, mainly in Tamil Nadu.

Kuchipudi is another dance form that is popular in southern parts of India, mainly in Andhra Pradesh. One of the features of this dance form is the use of gestures to tell a story.

Kathakali is very popular in Kerala. In this classical dance form, the dancers wear elaborate costumes. The male dancers wear face-masks and colourful make up.

Manipuri dance originated in Manipur. This dance form is mainly based on the love between Radha and Krishna.

Odissi originated in Odisha. Dancers use body movements, expressions, gestures, and sign language to convey a story.

Sattriya is popular in Assam. The costume used in this dance is primarily of two types. The male costume comprises a dhoti, chadar, and paguri. The female costume comprises a ghuri, chadar, and kanchi.

Mohiniattam is another classical dance form that is popular in southern parts of India, mainly in Kerala. The costume includes a plain white or off-white sari with a bright golden border. The dancers also wear a golden belt on their waist.
