US President Joe Biden hosted the Democracy Summit at the White House with more than 100 leaders participating virtually. Biden expressed alarm at the “backward slide” of democracy around the globe. He said, “I believe that together, the world’s democracies will lead the march of human progress and freedom forward.” China and Russia were among those countries that were not invited. This summit comes as Biden is pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin to step back after a huge buildup of soldiers on the Ukraine border. Biden warned of consequences if Russia invaded.
