This week on NL #Hafta, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal, and Mehraj D Lone are joined by Raghu Karnad, author and contributing editor of the Wire.

Reflecting back to the #DelhiRiots that took place last February, Raghu describes how he saw masked men chanting “Jai Shri Ram”, setting fires, and smashing vehicles, even as the police were in the vicinity. He also recalls how the men asked him and other journalists, “Media ho ya mulla ho?”

Manisha says that one year later, “the press and the police no longer look at the Delhi riots as a communal incident but as a conspiracy, and how JNU, Jamia and Shaheen Bagh students got together to set Delhi on flames.” The panel also discusses the curious case of Faizan, the man who died after being forced to sing the national anthem by the police during the riots, and the lackadaisical police investigation into the matter.

Moving on to Covid news, Raman brings up #Patanjali’s fake claim that their Coronil drug is the “first evidence-based cure for Covid” and that it’s purportedly been certified by the World Health Organisation. He pointed out how this was endorsed by cabinet ministers like Nitin Gadkari and Harsh Vardhan, even as the WHO clarified that it hadn’t approved any traditional medicine for the treatment of Covid. The panel discusses the differing reactions of the Indian Medical Association and the Delhi Medical Association to these claims.

The conversation also spans Disha Ravi’s bail, how the Motera stadium was renamed after Narendra Modi, and more.
