On October 12, the Civil Aviation Ministry announced that domestic airlines can now operate passenger flights at 100 per cent capacity. Domestic airlines have been operating at 85 per cent capacity since September 18. The new order will come into effect from October 18. The ministry said airlines and airport operators will have to ensure Covid-19 guidelines are strictly adhered to. The ministry said capacity restrictions had been removed after a review of the demand for air travel. In September, the government had increased capacity restrictions from 72.5 per cent to 85 per cent. The pandemic hit the airline industry hard with a loss of billions of dollars. Meanwhile, billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala has also entered the airline space. On October 11, Jhunjhunwala’s Air Akasa received clearance from the Aviation Ministry.
