The accumulation of water around the lungs inside the chest is called 'pleural effusion' or 'hydrothorax' in medical language. When a fluid called lymph accumulates, it is called 'chylothorax'. The upper part of the lung has the ability to absorb the seeping water. Because of this, a balance is maintained between water seepage and absorption. But whenever there is an excess amount of water in the upper part of the lungs, then this balance gets disturbed. Due to which water collects around the lungs.

छाती के अन्दर फेफड़े के चारों ओर पानी के जमाव को मेडिकल भाषा में 'प्ल्यूरल इफ्यूजन' या 'हाइड्रोथोरेक्स' कहते हैं। जब लिम्फ नामक के लिक्विड पदार्थ का जमाव होता है तो इसे 'काइलोथोरेक्स' कहते हैं। लंग्स के ऊपरी भाग से रिसते पानी को सोखने की क्षमता होती है। इस वजह से पानी रिसने सोखने के बीच एक बैलेंस बना रहता है। पर जब कभी फेफड़े के ऊपरी भाग में पानी की अधिक मात्रा हो जाती है तो यह बैलेंस बिगड़ जाता है। जिसके कारण फेफड़ों के चारों ओर पानी इकट्ठा हो जाता है।
