The World Health Organization has identified another variant of the COVID 19 virus, which has since been classified as a “variant of interest.” This new variant is known as the Mew variant and it was first discovered in Colombia in January, 2021. This “variant of interest” has since been noticed in 39 countries.

Viruses are classified as “variants of interest” when changes take place to them, mutating into viruses with a capacity to become more dangerous. And the Mew variant seems to be considered like that for now.

The World Health Organization’s initial studies, also seem to suggest that the antibodies received from the current vaccines being used, could be partially ineffective towards the Mew variant. These studies are ongoing and there is no conclusive data yet. The evidence produced so far, are based on laboratory results. There is no information to date on how this evidence can play out on actual populations.

However, the Mew variant does not seem to be spreading as fast as the Delta variant. The Delta variant is currently dominating globally.

Community spread of the COVID 19 virus, increases the chances of new variants emerging. Hence, observing the guidelines on limiting the spread is seriously important.

Remember to wear your mask, to wash and sanitize your hands, and practice social distancing. Remember also that the current vaccines are performing well against COVID 19 , in preventing severe illness and death.

In view of this, the best method to reduce the emergence of new variants, is to limit the viruses environment to reproduce and mutate in populations, through vaccination.
