An uneasy calm prevails in Meghalaya, where violent clashes broke out on Independence Day following the killing of militant outfit HNLC's leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew. Curfew in Shillong Agglomeration will be relaxed from 5 am to 5 pm on Thursday, August 19. However, the government has banned public gatherings and events, and there is heavy deployment of security personnel in Shillong and other parts of the state to maintain the law and order situation.
