Meghalaya Home Minister Quits, Curfew In Shillong Over Death Of Former Militant

Lahkmen Rymbui, Meghalaya Home Minister on August 15 resigned from his post. This comes amid protests over the encounter of Chesterfield Thangkhiew, former General Secretary of militant group HNLC on August 13. A curfew in the Shillong Agglomeration area of the capital was imposed from 8 pm on August 15 till 5 am on August 17. Rymbui in his letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, expressed shock and also proposed a judicial enquiry be conducted into the death of Thangkhiew. Several Thangkhiew’s supporters carried black flags. Reportedly, they damaged government vehicles and also set a police vehicle on fire in Jaiaw, Shillong. Internet services were also suspended from 6 pm on August 15 for 48 hours in the districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills & other areas, reported Hindustan Times.
