Iran's New President Ebrahim Raisi Sworn In: International Sanctions, Economy At The Top Of The Priority List

Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's eight president, has been sworn into office. This comes post his election victory in June. 60-year-old Raisi, a hardline cleric, succeeds Hassan Rouhani. At the ceremony in Iran’s parliament in Tehran on August 5, Raisi, with a hand on a Quran, read the inauguration oath. He said that he will make Iran stronger and engage with the world. This comes at a time of growing challenges for Iran. Iran’s economy has been crippled by US-led sanctions. After being sworn in, Raisi said harsh US sanctions, imposed in 2018 after then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally abandoned Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal, must be lifted. Raisi said regional crises need to be resolved through dialogue, and the presence of foreign forces only encourages more instability.
