These four months are called Chaturmas. Chaturmas is said to be the time to worship God. No auspicious work is done during this period. According to religious scriptures, Lord Vishnu in Vamana avatar had asked the demon king Bali three steps of land as a donation. The Lord covered the entire earth, sky and all directions in the first step. In the next step, he took the entire heavenly world. In the third step, Bali dedicated himself and asked to keep a foot on his head. Pleased with this kind of donation, God made Bali the king of Hades and asked him to ask for a boon. Asking for a boon, Bali said that Lord, you should reside in my palace. Then God, seeing the devotion of Bali, granted him a boon to stay in his palace for four months. According to religious belief, Lord Vishnu resides in the palace of Bali in Patala from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devprabodhini Ekadashi.

ये चार महीने चातुर्मास कहलाते हैं। चातुर्मास को भगवान की भक्ति करने का समय बताया गया है। इस दौरान कोई मांगलिक कार्य भी नहीं किए जाते। इन 4 महीनों में धरती का भार भगवान शिव के पास होता है। देवशयनी एकादशी पर भगवान विष्णु की विशेष पूजा की जाती है। धर्म शास्त्रों के अनुसार, भगवान विष्णु ने वामन अवतार में दैत्यराज बलि से तीन पग भूमि दान के रूप में मांगी थी। भगवान ने पहले पग में संपूर्ण पृथ्वी, आकाश और सभी दिशाओं को ढक लिया। अगले पग में सम्पूर्ण स्वर्ग लोक ले लिया। तीसरे पग में बलि ने अपने आप को समर्पित करते हुए सिर पर पग रखने को कहा। इस प्रकार के दान से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान ने बलि को पाताल लोक का राजा बना दिया और कहा वर मांगो। बलि ने वर मांगते हुए कहा कि भगवान आप मेरे महल में निवास करें। तब भगवान ने बलि की भक्ति को देखते हुए चार मास तक उसके महल में रहने का वरदान दिया। धार्मिक मान्यता के अनुसार, भगवान विष्णु देवशयनी एकादशी से देवप्रबोधिनी एकादशी तक पाताल में बलि के महल में निवास करते हैं।
