A brutal heat wave punishing the U.S. West pushed temperatures toward all-time records for a third day on Sunday (July 11) with California registering some of the hottest temperatures on the planet.

In the desert city of Palm Springs where temperatures are set to continue on their upward trend this week, popsicles quickly melted in the sun as the heat index rose above 113-degrees Fahrenheit (45 Celsius).

In Death Valley in California, a fiery 130-degrees Fahrenheit (54 Celsius) was registered, making it again one of the world's hottest places.
