With the signing of the Treaty between the United Kingdom and the German Empire in 1890, Zanzibar itself became a British protectorate.
The sultanate, formerly of much larger extent, was reduced in 1890 to the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, some adjacent islets, the nominal sovereignty of the coast line, for ten miles inland.
