Differences between co-ops and grocery stores or supermarkets in much of the world lie in the differences between the structures of ownership of food co-ops and other food stores. The first element
of which most shoppers are aware is that the vast majority of supermarkets are parts of “chains.” These chains are often a small part of a corporation that is a vertically integrated oligopoly.
