Farmers from Malkangiri and Sambalpur districts have alleged massive irregularities in the paddy procurement process. Hundreds of farmers at the MV-72 mandi in Malkangiri demanded intervention of the district administration and the State Government accusing ‘middlemen involvement’ in preparing forged documents in the name of farmers.

According to the allegations, the middlemen have been registering themselves as farmers and getting identity cards from the cooperative societies. This allows the middlemen to procure the paddy at cheaper rates and then sell them to the cooperative societies at higher prices. The middlemen successfully do so by using fake identity cards. The farmers from Malkangiri also said that the irregularities are a result of a nexus between the middlemen and officials with vested interests. Meanwhile, the farmers have threatened to intensify protests if the issue is not addressed immediately by the district administration.

Similarly, many farmers in Sambalpur alleged foul play by the officials of the Supply department in registering ghost farmers for paddy procurement. The farmers have demanded investigation and an end to such illegal activities.
