In the absence of any law on sexual harassment of women at the workplace, the Supreme Court laid down binding guidelines to be implemented by all workplaces in its judgment in Vishaka v. State of Rajasthan (1997) 6 SCC 241. In December 2013, the Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 came into effect, providing civil remedies for sexual harassment at the workplace. In April 2013, the Criminal Law Amendment Act 2013, introduced Section 354A, which specifically defined sexual harassment as a criminal offence, punishable with imprisonment which may extend to 3 years.
