A cargo ship carrying tonnes of chemicals sank off Sri Lanka’s west coast, its navy said on Wednesday, and tonnes of plastic pellets have fouled the country’s rich fishing waters in one of its worst-ever marine disasters.

శ్రీ‌లంక ప‌శ్చిమ తీరంలో ఓ భారీ నౌక మునిగిపోయింది. టన్నులకొద్ది కెమికల్ లోడ్‌తో వెళ్తున్న ఆ కార్గో నౌకలో అగ్ని ప్రమాదం సంభవించింది. గత నెల 20వ తేదీన ఈ ప్రమాదం సంభవించగా... అప్పటినుంచి క్రమంగా అది మునిగిపోవడం మొదలైంది. నౌక సముద్రంలో మునిగిపోకుండా శ్రీలంక నౌకాదళం చేపట్టిన చర్యలేవీ ఫలించలేదు. నౌకలో ఉన్న 25 మంది సిబ్బందిని రక్షించగలిగారు. శ్రీలంకలో చోటు చేసుకున్న అత్యంత ఘోర సముద్ర విపత్తుల్లో ఇది కూడా ఒకటని అక్కడి ప్రభుత్వం ప్రకటించింది.
