At 14, Sushil Kumar joined the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. In just a year, he won a gold medal at the World Cadet Games and then at the Beijing Games in 2008, Sushil moved up to the 66kg category, but he suffered an opening-round defeat. But through the repechage, Sushil managed to give himself a shot at the bronze medal. He won the world wrestling championships in 2010, rallying against an unruly local crowd in Russia to beat the local favourite in the gold medal match. In the same year, he also won the Commonwealth Games gold in front of the local fans, ascertaining his stardom on the mat. Once the torchbearer of Indian wrestling, Sushil is now being seen as someone who has hurt the reputation of the sport in India. After having been on the run for over a fortnight, Sushil was arrested by Delhi Police from the national capital on May 23. He has been accused of murder after a 23-year-old wrestler, who trained at the Chhatraasal Stadium died in a brawl on May 4.
