The United Way of Greater Knoxville has been devastatingly affected by the economy and numerous large companies implementing layoffs or closing altogether, said the charity's board Chair Sharon Pryse.
Typically, the United Way provides resources to the community, but recently the charity has had to rethink where its financial resources will come from, as companies like Goody's and ImagePoint shut down in the area. These two companies are normally dependable contributors of financial donations.
According to TV station WBIR, a local NBC affiliate, the organization expects to cut down its overhead expenses to make sure it meets its 2009 goals.
United Way is not the only charity feeling the employment downslide—Children's Hospital has also seen a contraction in donations, though community support remains strong.
