With the availability of a vaccine for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) starting this year, there is optimism that the Philippine and global economies will gradually recover from 2021.
Also, severe Covid-19 cases in the Philippines have remained low while the death toll also lesser compared to Western countries.
The Philippine stock market has also shown signs of recovery, and the government is looking to open the domestic economy gradually.
And while the recent typhoons somehow tempered the positive sentiments towards the recovery of the Philippine economy, this has not dampened the prospects of the country’s agriculture sector to post better growth in 2021, as the focus of the Department of Agriculture (DA) led by Dr. William D. Dar can now shift from ensuring food security amid pandemic to further modernizing and industrializing the country’s farming and fisheries sector anew.
Notably, the agriculture was the best performer among the country’s economic subsectors in 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The DA was also lauded recently by President Rodrigo Duterte as one of the top-performing national government agencies in 2020, as it successfully assured affordable, accessible and healthy food supply, amid the logistical challenges due to the community lockdowns and for assuring that there will be no queues or “pila” for food.
On Thursday, March 25, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12:00 noon, The Manila Times (TMT) will hold its 3rd online business forum for the year titled “Prospects of Agriculture beyond the Covid pandemic.”
Keynote speakers include Agriculture Secretary William Dar, who will talk about how the Philippines intends to modernize and industrialize its agri-fisheries sector; University of the Philippines Los Banos Chancellor Dr. Jose Camacho; and University of Asia and the Pacific Professor Dr. Bernardo Villegas.
