Mauni Amavasya also known as ‘Mauna Amavasya’ is a unique Hindu tradition observed on the amavasya (no moon day) during the Hindu month of Magha. Mauni Amavasya is also referred as 'Maghi Amavasya' as it is observed in the month of Magha. The word 'mauni' or 'mauna' signifies silence, therefore on this chosen day, most of the Hindus observe complete silence.

माघ महीने की अमावस्या को मौनी अमावस्या कहा जाता है. ज्योतिष शास्त्र में अमावस्या तिथि का विशेष महत्व होता है। इस बार मौनी अमावस्या 11 फरवरी को है. अमावस्या के बारे में ये भी कहा जाता है कि इस दिन मनु ऋषि का जन्म हुआ था और मनु शब्द से ही मौनी की उत्पत्ति हुई है. इसलिए इस अमावस्या को मौनी अमावस्या कहते हैं. मौनी अमावस्या के दिन स्नान, दान और पुण्य करना बहुत शुभ माना जाता है. मान्यता है कि इस दिन तिल या उससे बनी वस्तुओं का दान करने से भगवान विष्णु का आशीर्वाद मिलता है. मौनी अमावस्या पर पितरों के लिए सारे काम मौन रह कर किए जाते हैं.
