पद्म पुराण के अनुसार, एक बार एक राजा थे जिनका नाम महिष्मान था। वे चम्पावती नगरी के राजा था। उनके पांच पुत्र थे। उनका सबसे बड़ा पुत्र था लुम्भक जो चरित्रहीन था। वह हमेशा ही देवताओं की निंदा करता था। साथ ही मांस भक्षण जैसे गलत कार्यों में लिप्त रहता था। राजा अपने बेटे के इन सभी कार्यों से काफी परेशान था। उसने अपने बड़े बेटे को राज्य से बाहर निकाल दिया। ऐसे में वो जंगल में जाकर रहने लगा।

According to Padma Purana, there was once a king named Mahishman. He was the king of the city of Champawati. They had five sons. His eldest son was Lumbhak who was characterless. He always condemned the gods. Also, he used to indulge in wrong deeds like meat eating. The king was greatly disturbed by all these actions of his son. He drove his elder son out of the kingdom. In such a situation, he started living in the forest.
