In North Carolina, an agency spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said more than 750 temporary workers have now been laid off.
The temporary employee layoffs have mainly fallen to field offices statewide. The layoffs, which began in late October, had only reached 88 dismissals as of early last month. Additional cuts are expected among remaining temporary workers, who perform such tasks as mow grass, perform surveying and clerical work, and other duties.
The layoffs are part of a larger plan implemented by the department to make up for a $110 million decline in projected tax and fee collections.
