An emergency has been declared in Malaysia as the government attempts to curb and stabilise the number of Covid-19 cases in the country, a number that peaked today with 3,309 new cases.

The declaration of emergency will also allow Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to suspend Parliament and delay the Sarawak state election.

The Perikatan Nasional government has recently seen its majority vanish and it is understood that Muhyiddin only has the support of 110 MPs.

The emergency declaration which entails the suspension of Parliament should mean that he will not have to face a vote of no confidence until Aug 1, giving his embattled administration some stability during this period.

KiniTV spoke to Professor of Asian Studies, University of Tasmania James Chin and lawyer Andrew Khoo to make sense of the complex situation witness for the first time by many Malaysians.
