The Crown-Prince Salim, who later became Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the son of the great Mughal emperor Akbar, fell in love with a beautiful courtesan named Anarkali, which means "blossom of
pomegranate" was famed for her dancing skills as well as her great beauty. The prince was mesmerized by her beauty and fell in love as soon as he saw her. Anarkali also fell deeply in love with Salim.

The emperor did not accept the fact that his son was in love with an ordinary courtesan. Seeing their deep relationship, King Akbar ordered to bury her alive within a wall of his palace.

"The first historical mention of Anarkali is found in the travelogue of the British tourist and trader, William Finch, who came to Lahore during 1608 to 1611. According to Finch’s account, Anarkali was one of the wives of Emperor Akbar and the mother of his son Danial Shah. Akbar developed suspicions that Anarkali had incestuous relations with Prince Saleem (Jahangir) and, on this ground had her buried alive in the wall of Lahore Fort. Jahangir, after ascending the throne, had this splendid tomb constructed, at the present site, in memory of his beloved."
